A new and exciting development on the international student exchange programme for Kiwi kids.
--- Several options. Term 2 (April to July - 2.5 months), April to August (5 months) April to January of the following year (10 months). A 'GAP' type programme may also be available.Programme duration
Host schools --- public or private senior high schools in Japan
Status of stay in Japan --- Students are authorised as WYS exchange students from the Ministry of Justice in Japan
Qualification of Applicant - Students are to be in Forms 5 to 7 at the departure time (Yrs 11-13). Students are nominated by their own school and selected by WYS-NZ at Orientation week-end. Preference will be given to students whose families are able to host an incoming reciprocal student, either prior, concurrent, or retrospective to Kiwi student going to Japan.
Recruiting number of WYS students from your school - Schools may nominate several students - so encourage your friends to apply too and have a shared experience.
Program fee --- There is scholarship funds to supplement your costs - NZ student students can have ten months in Japan virtually for the cost of their airfare and their compulsory insurance ($3500)* if their family will host an incoming Japanese student in return.
For students who make successful applications and whose families are unable to host a Japanese in-bound exchangee the WYS experience in Japan will cost $8500*up front. Compare this with other exchange programmes.
*note: these prices may be dependent on the cost of airfares being affected by escalating fuel prices

Student’s financial responsibility on top of the above - NZ travel expenses (to WYS-NZ at Masters Hall pre-departure meetings, to chosen International Airport, any airport taxes), Japan travel (International Airport to host family community), general school expenses (travel between host family and school, club meetings, excursions, school uniform, textbooks, stationery, etc), private expenses (pocket money, eating out, telephone charges, etc.), compulsory student & travel insurance. Most students manage on $2000-$3000 for the exchange, depending on their level of frugality.
WYS is well-served by a very professional team at WYS-Japan headquarters.
